بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

105.1-5

اَلَمْ تَرَ كَیْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِاَصْحٰبِ الْفِیْلِﭤ(1) اَلَمْ یَجْعَلْ كَیْدَهُمْ فِیْ تَضْلِیْلٍۙ (2) وَّ اَرْسَلَ عَلَیْهِمْ طَیْرًا اَبَابِیْلَۙ (3) تَرْمِیْهِمْ بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّنْ سِجِّیْلٍﭪ (4) فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّاْكُوْلٍ۠ (5)

English translation of Kanz-ul-Imaan

O Beloved, did you not see how your Lord dealt with the People of the Elephant? Did He not put their trick into devastation? And sent swarms of birds over them. Striking them with stones of baked clay. So, He made them like the leftover consumed leaves of harvest (i.e. husk).

Commentary

The summary of this incident is that the king of Yemen and Abyssinia, namely Abrahah, had a church built in Sanaa in opposition to the Kaʿbah in Makkah, intending to divert pilgrims of Hajj away from Makkah to Sanaa. The Arabs were repulsed by this and a man from the Banū Kinānah tribe went and defecated in the church. Upon realising, Abrahah became furious and swore an oath to destroy the Kaʿbah. He then reached Makkah with his army which consisted of many elephants. Here, when he commanded the army to get ready, Allah Almighty sent armies of birds which struck Abrahah and his army with pebbles of baked clay, leaving them severed like straw devoured by animals.
